If you slapped a leaf on your logo and switched to double-sided printing while pretending to save the planet, you may run foul of Canada’s greenwashing legislation.
In June 2024, Canada enacted Bill C-59, which introduced amendments to the Competition Act specifically targeting greenwashing. In short, if you make environmental or social claims, they need to be backed by actions that deliver the benefits you’re promising—and those claims should be testable, not just wishful thinking; testing must also be against a recognized standard.
Saying you are green is not enough – now you now need receipts.
